Door of Water
Door of Water (2023) by Japanese sculptor Tatsumi Sakai is a contemplative work that explores the elemental force of water through abstract stone forms. Inspired by the fluidity and transformative power of water, Sakai crafts a sculpture that evokes the movement and energy inherent in this vital element.
The sculpture features elegant curves and openings that suggest the flow of water, inviting viewers to consider the myriad forms water takes—from clouds and ice to rivers and oceans. Sakai’s work serves as a metaphorical gateway, encouraging contemplation of water’s dual nature as both life-giving and potentially destructive.
In his artist statement, Sakai reflects:
“Water is all around us in the form of clouds, ice, and many other forms, sometimes bringing blessings and sometimes disasters. Consider the energy of water in front of my work. And think about the possibilities of water.”
Installed at the King Abdulaziz Historical Center (KAHC), Door of Water stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of natural elements and artistic expression, inviting viewers to engage with the sculpture’s form and the deeper meanings it embodies.
